Follow the old Straits route from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur through UNESCO Malacca, where grand landmarks, Peranakan heritage, neighbourhood life and memorable dining reveal the cultures that shaped modern Malaysia and Singapore.
The Journey

Three cities, one historic route

The Straits Journey follows the historic route between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur through Malacca, one of Southeast Asia’s great trading ports. Across three very different cities, the journey traces the cultures, communities and influences that shaped both modern Singapore and Malaysia.

Begin among Singapore’s civic landmarks, riverfront and extraordinary contemporary gardens before travelling overland to UNESCO-listed Malacca, where Peranakan traditions and centuries of Malay, Chinese and European history remain part of the living city. Continue north to Kuala Lumpur, where mosques, markets and old neighbourhoods sit alongside the Petronas Towers and a rapidly changing skyline.

Along the way, private guiding, distinctive local dining and hands-on experiences bring another layer to the journey, from Peranakan cuisine and Chinese opera in Singapore to batik, banana leaf rice and the limestone sanctuary of Batu Caves.

The itinerary can be travelled in either direction and tailored around your interests, pace and preferred style of travel.

DAY 01

Arrival in Singapore

Day one of your Singapore Malacca Kuala Lumpur tour: arrive at Changi, settle into The Capitol Kempinski and keep the day free, with early check-in arranged for morning arrivals and an optional guided neighbourhood introduction available.

Arrive at Singapore Changi Airport, where your private driver meets you after immigration and baggage collection. For morning arrivals, early check-in is arranged at The Capitol Kempinski, so the day begins properly with a shower, a rest and time to adjust rather than hours spent waiting for a room.

The rest of the day is intentionally free. Stay close to the hotel, enjoy a light meal nearby, or step out independently into the surrounding civic district. The hotel’s central location makes it easy to begin absorbing Singapore at your own pace.

If you would like context from the very beginning, we can arrange an optional private guided introduction to Kampong Glam and Little India this afternoon. This is not included, keeping the arrival day flexible for guests who prefer to rest.

DAY 02

Raffles, the River & the Last Malayan Tiger

Explore Singapore’s civic heart on foot, cruise the river by bumboat and end the walk with a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar. Bookings of four or more add a Peranakan dinner with Chinese opera.

Meet your guide after breakfast for a walk through Singapore’s civic heart. Around the Padang, the city’s colonial and national stories sit in close view: St Andrew’s Cathedral, the Old Parliament House, the National Gallery and the open green that has witnessed so many public moments.

Continue past the neoclassical Fullerton Hotel to the site where Sir Stamford Raffles first came ashore in 1819, then board a traditional bumboat on the Singapore River, once the commercial artery of the colonial port, still the city’s most elegant corridor.

The walk ends at Raffles with a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar and the curious tale of the last wild tiger said to have been shot within the city.

In the evening, one of the journey’s most distinctive experiences awaits: for bookings of four or more guests, a Peranakan dinner experience with a short Chinese opera performance, an intimate, multisensory evening of beautifully presented dishes and living tradition (shared experience, minimum four guests). Travelling as two or three? The evening is yours, and our notes point you to the best of the neighbourhood.

DAY 03

Gardens by the Bay and Sunset Chinatown

Spend the morning independently at Gardens by the Bay, then meet your guide for an afternoon transfer to Chinatown and a sunset heritage walk ending at Lau Pa Sat.

The morning is yours to enjoy Gardens by the Bay at your own pace. We recommend allowing time for both the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, where carefully curated landscapes, waterfalls and cool-air planting create a dramatic contrast to the tropical city outside. Your conservatory admission is included; private transfers to and from the gardens can be added if you prefer not to arrange your own transport.

Return to the hotel or enjoy lunch independently before meeting your guide in the afternoon. A private transfer brings you to Chinatown as the day begins to soften toward evening, the ideal time to explore the district’s temples, conserved shophouses, markets and everyday neighbourhood streets.

When the temple schedule and visitor access allow, begin at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple to observe its closing ceremony. Continue on foot through the surrounding streets as lanterns and shop lights come on, with your guide bringing the district’s stories, trades and communities into focus. Finish at Lau Pa Sat, where the evening food stalls offer an informal and lively dinner with your guide on hand to help you order well.

DAY 04

Across the Border to Malacca and Kuala Lumpur

Cross from Singapore into Malaysia, pause in Malacca for Dutch Square, Jonker Street and a Peranakan lunch, then continue north to The RuMa.

Depart Singapore early by private vehicle and cross the land border into Malaysia. Border formalities and traffic shape the timing, so the day is planned with flexibility rather than a rigid schedule.

Continue to Malacca for a focused heritage visit. Dutch Square and Christ Church recall the city’s colonial layers, while the riverside and Jonker Street reveal the older trading town beneath them. Lunch is Peranakan, the cuisine of the Straits Chinese communities that blended Chinese technique with Malay ingredients and local taste.

In the afternoon, continue north to Kuala Lumpur and check in at The RuMa. It is a long but rewarding travel day, designed around immigration, road conditions and enough time in Malacca to make the stop feel worthwhile.

DAY 05

Kuala Lumpur, Old and New

Move from KLCC and the Petronas Towers to Masjid Jamek, Independence Square, Chinatown and dinner at Jalan Alor.

Begin in KLCC, where the Petronas Twin Towers rise above the park and surrounding city. If you wish, we can request Skybridge and Observation Deck tickets, subject to availability. Otherwise, the towers are best appreciated from outside as part of the city’s modern skyline.

From here, continue into old Kuala Lumpur. Masjid Jamek stands at the meeting of the Klang and Gombak rivers, the confluence that gave the city its name. Independence Square, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the surrounding heritage streets reveal another Kuala Lumpur, shaped by colonial administration, tin wealth and independence.

The walk continues into Chinatown and the restored lanes of Kwai Chai Hong. In the evening, dinner is at Jalan Alor, where charcoal smoke, satay, seafood, noodles and clattering plates bring the city’s street-food culture vividly to life.

DAY 06

Batu Caves, Batik & a River Lunch

Start early at Batu Caves, create your own batik piece at the Emilia Batik House and sit down to a riverside barbecue lunch before a free afternoon.

Start early for Batu Caves, before the steps become busier and the heat settles in. The golden figure of Murugan rises at the foot of the staircase, and the main cave opens into a vast limestone chamber of shrines, rock and daylight.

From here, continue to the Emilia Batik House for a hands-on workshop of 60 to 90 minutes. With gentle guidance, you will create a personal piece to take home, learning how wax, dye and pattern come together in one of Malaysia’s most recognisable craft traditions.

Lunch follows in a relaxed riverside setting: a barbecue lunch by the water, unhurried and local. The afternoon is free back at The RuMa.

DAY 07

Landmarks, Gardens and Banana Leaf Rice

Explore the Lake Gardens, National Monument, Royal Palace viewpoint and National Mosque before a traditional banana leaf rice lunch and a restful final afternoon.

Spend the morning among Kuala Lumpur’s greener and more ceremonial spaces. The Lake Gardens offer a softer view of the city, with shaded paths and mature trees, while the National Monument and Royal Palace viewpoint add context to Malaysia’s national story.

Continue to the National Mosque, whose folded white roof and calm courtyards express a modern Malaysian approach to Islamic architecture. Your guide will help you navigate each stop with context and care, keeping the morning unhurried.

Lunch is a hidden gem: banana leaf rice at a family-run kitchen, far from the tourist trail. Rice, curries, vegetables, pickles and crisp papadum arrive together, generous and informal. Return to the hotel for a restful final afternoon and time to prepare for departure.

Good to Know

Questions, answered

Can this Singapore, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur journey run in reverse?

Yes. The route works equally well from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, with the order, transfers and touring adjusted accordingly.

How many days do you need for Singapore, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur?

We recommend eight days and seven nights as the minimum for this journey. Any shorter and the route begins to feel rushed, particularly if you want to experience Malacca properly rather than simply pass through it. Singapore can easily be extended by one or more nights for additional neighbourhoods, dining, museums or a slower start to the journey.

Can you travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by road via Malacca?

Yes. The private overland journey from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur includes time in UNESCO-listed Malacca, turning the transfer between the two cities into part of the experience. Travelling by road also avoids the additional airport time involved in flying and allows Malacca to sit naturally within the route. You need to cross borders by land and going through passport control and customs.

Is this a private Singapore and Malaysia tour?

Yes. The Straits Journey is completely private. There are no fixed group departures, and the itinerary can be shaped around your dates, interests and preferred pace.

Can we customize this Singapore and Malaysia itinerary?

Absolutely. Experiences, restaurants, hotels and the pace of the journey can all be adjusted. Singapore can be extended with additional nights, and the itinerary can also continue to other parts of Malaysia, including Penang, Langkawi or the rainforest, depending on your interests and available time.

What hotels are included in the journey?

Our featured itinerary combines The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore, set within the restored Capitol Building and Stamford House in the Civic District, with The RuMa Hotel and Residences, a five-star MICHELIN Key hotel in central Kuala Lumpur. Alternative hotels can be arranged on request.

What type of vehicle is used during the tour?

Private Toyota Alphard transportation is used throughout the journey, including touring in Singapore and Malaysia and the overland route between Singapore, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur, offering a more spacious and comfortable way to travel than a standard touring vehicle. Alhaprds are available for up to 4 guests (maximum 5). For larger groups we offer Tourist Van.

Is this Singapore and Malaysia journey suitable for children?

The Straits Journey is primarily designed for adults and families interested in culture, history, food and local life. However, the walking is generally manageable and the journey includes plenty of variety, from river cruises and colourful neighbourhoods to gardens, food experiences and hands-on activities. It can work very well for older children and teenagers, although we would not particularly recommend the standard itinerary for babies or very young children without adapting the pace and activities.

Do you recommend staying overnight in Malacca?

For this particular journey, normally not. We prefer to experience Malacca as part of the overland route between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, allowing enough time to explore its historic centre, Peranakan heritage and enjoy lunch without adding another hotel change. If you would particularly like to stay overnight, however, we can absolutely redesign the itinerary to include it.

Can I fly from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and visit Malacca separately from Kuala Lumpur?

Yes, this is certainly possible, and Malacca can be visited as a private day trip or overnight stay from Kuala Lumpur. However, this becomes a different itinerary. For The Straits Journey, we generally recommend travelling overland from Singapore through Malacca to Kuala Lumpur. Once airport transfers, check-in and flight time are considered, flying does not necessarily save enough time to justify missing the journey between the two cities. Travelling by road also allows Malacca to become a natural part of the route rather than requiring a separate return journey from Kuala Lumpur. If you prefer to fly, contact us and we can design the journey around that routing instead.
