Elephants & the Road into the Rainforest
Day one of your Taman Negara tour. An early start from Kuala Lumpur: the city falls away as you head east toward the highlands. The first stop is the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, where you’ll meet the gentle Asian giants and learn about the conservation work that protects them.
From here, the road narrows into the green. Arrive at Mutiara Taman Negara Resort in the afternoon and settle into your chalet (upgrades available). After dinner, an experienced nature guide takes you into the darkness for a night jungle walk. The rainforest after dark is an entirely different world of sound and movement.

The New Canopy Walkway & Lata Berkoh
Wake to the sound of the jungle and breakfast at the resort, perhaps nasi lemak, Malaysia’s beloved national dish. Then it’s into the forest with your nature guide: towering trees, medicinal plants and, with luck, wildlife along the trail.
The morning’s high point is literal: the brand-new Seberang Ara Canopy Walkway, opened in June 2026. Some 700 metres of suspension bridges and viewing platforms suspended 35 metres above the forest floor, with views toward Gunung Tahan from Teresek Hill on the way back. One thing to know: tickets are first come, first served and daily numbers are limited. We go early, and while we’ll do everything to secure your slot, the walkway cannot be guaranteed. (It’s also closed on Fridays.) If the walkway is closed, the morning becomes a proper jungle hike to Teresek Hill instead, with its sweeping views toward Gunung Tahan.
After lunch back at the resort, the afternoon is yours on the water: a wooden longboat up the Sungai Tahan to Lata Berkoh, one of Taman Negara’s most beautiful corners, where clear spring water tumbles over ancient boulders. En route you pause at a giant Tualang tree and the Kelah Fish Sanctuary, where the sacred river fish gather thick enough to feed by hand. At Lata Berkoh itself, soak your feet in the shallows and drift in the natural pools; the main cascade is admired, not swum, for its undercurrents. Back at the resort, dinner and the sounds of the night jungle.

Rapids, the Orang Asli & the Slow Return
One last morning on the river, and it starts with a thrill: a shared boat shooting the Tembeling’s rapids to an Orang Asli village, where you’ll learn about traditional life in the forest and try your hand at the blowpipe. On the way back, there’s time for a swim in the river.
Back at the resort it’s time to check out. Lunch today is yours to choose; we recommend one of the floating restaurants just in front of the resort. Then it’s time to leave the rainforest behind: your driver takes you back to Kuala Lumpur, or onward anywhere in Malaysia you’d like to go next.
Want more than a taste? Our 12-day Malaysia, Truly Asia journey includes these two jungle nights plus the Cameron Highlands, Ipoh and Penang.
